Gurney Halleck: ISTP

Guest Post by Andrew, ENTJ

Dune, Frank Herbert

Dominant Introverted Thinking (Ti): Gurney likes to silently analyze his situation and his environment, whether there’s a lot or a little going on around him. He prefers to teach Paul how to fight with practice alone, nearly eschewing spoken instructions altogether (Ti-Se). Gurney’s decision-making process is almost entirely based on logic, especially deductive logic, and only by using reason can anyone convince him of anything. After the death of Duke Leto and the disappearances of Jessica and Paul, Gurney is not above going outside the law to continue opposing the House Harkonnen.

Auxiliary Extroverted Sensing (Se): Gurney is renowned for his use of bladed weapons. His skill at knife fighting is the stuff of legends, and much like his student, Paul, he is more than comfortable jumping into the fray during big battles. Gurney seizes opportunities before him enough to adapt to unfamiliar environments or escape from dangerous situations like few others would. Apart from his fighting skills, Gurney is also a noted musician who could entertain guests with his own playing.

Tertiary Introverted Intuition (Ni): Gurney has a habit of quoting scripture whenever he finds a particular passage to be symbolically relevant – which, apparently, is almost always. When he becomes a lover to Jessica, he is always careful enough to keep their relationship a secret. Gurney is always focused on whatever he is doing, and he always keeps part of his mind on his primary enemies, the Harkonnens. Gurney is not always the best at avoiding traps, and he is almost killed by a trap set by the Fremen.

Inferior Extroverted Feeling (Fe): Although Gurney is a very logical man, his morality is an important source of motivation for him. He puts others, especially his master in the House Atreides, before himself, and when he feels he has failed the Atreides (by suspecting Jessica of betraying Duke Leto), he asks to be executed.
