Asa Butterfield: INFJ

Ni: Asa mentions that when he reads a script, he reads first for enjoyment and then for ideas and overarching themes and morals. He’s creative and loves music. He writes hip hop and dance music and enjoys DJing. He enjoys playing strategy games, but team strategy games (NiFe). He loves sic-fi, and the impossible, but also the possible (his favourite superhero is Batman because it’s possible). In interviews, he only speaks up if specifically asked, and if the question is directed at both him and another person, he lets the other person speak first. He always reads the books for the movies he’s part of (if applicable).

Fe: He’s clearly well attracted to emotional character arcs. The main compliment he gives to everyone is that they are kind and generous –and he gives genuine compliments far more often than most people. In fact, he never really stops complimenting people. His answers to potentially awkward questions are always diplomatically ambiguous. He makes broad generalisations of unity among people, pointing out that when he’s not filming, he’s “just another guy.” When asked about getting to know the other people on sets, he talks about being united and going through troubles together. When it comes to acting, his aims are to bring the character to life for everyone else, not just to challenge himself.

Ti: Asa is particularly good at summarising the details of plots (Ti), but then also makes a point to comment on the overall concepts and themes (Ni). He’s more picky about specifying differences between book and film than other actors.

Se: Asa talks a lot about how aesthetically interesting the sets of his films are, more so than other actors. His favourite scenes to film for Hugo were the chase scenes, or those that were physically active.

Asa was surprisingly tough to type because most of his interviews just answer questions about films and don’t necessarily give much incite into his daily thought process.

    • You’ve made a lot of disagreeing comments stating that characters “feel” or “look” differently than I’ve argued, but offered very little evidence to support your claims.

      • He doesn’t look like he has an overdeveloped superego that keeps making him shy, self-conscious and sad, which would mean Fe>Ni in the case of INFJ.

That is to say, his Fe strength (ego tied to social feedback) is greater than his Ni (superego/conscience), which would mean he can choose to ignore Ni for the sake of Fe gratification, which would mean getting positive social feedback is more important to him than acting conscientiously.

He doesn’t “look” that self-conscious to me. This overdeveloped superego (Ni or Si-dominance) coupled with auxiliary-Fe (facial expressiveness) is what gives IxFJs the sad/in pain look and the downturned eyes. He doesn’t have that look.

        • So all shy, self-concious and sad people are INFJs? What about INFPs who happen to have depression? Do they then, automatically use Fe and Ni?

Also, Ni/Si dominance does not equate to having a superego, though having an underdeveloped Feeling function often does.

A word of advice, don’t listen to anyone who tells you that you can assess MBTI based on a person’s facial features. Personality has nothing to do with a person’s physical appearance. There are plenty of INFJs that “look” very happy, plenty of INTJs who smile, and a very fair number of ESFPs who look very sad.

Its their sustenance. Don’t know what triggers but it but must me some kind of external feedback or comparison I guess. Some irrefutable external evidence that shows them they are not that special or unique, something that dispels the magic.

What would be the difference then? Don’t know. Perhaps Fi-doms’ depression is a short-term episode but Ni/Si-doms’ is a long lasting one. The former’s psychic wound is only temporary and closes yet the latter’s is chronic?

Anyway, Why do you then have an overdeveloped superego as I recall you mentioning in one of your posts?

Why are IxxJs extremely self-conscious? Why do they follow a code of ethics sometimes to their own detriment and against their self-interest (ego)? What compels them to do so if not superego?

And, as you’d notice, they are all Ni/Si-doms.

It took me decades to decrease the criticizing voice in my head and the boy is, how old, 15?

His smile in the last photo is not self-conscious at all. And believe me people’s psyche is reflected in their facial features. It is possible to notice the patterns. I gradually get better at it. Still far from perfect.

Perhaps it is due to Fe-Se couple, don’t know. What would Te-Se make you notice then? Material/utility value of “things”? What does Te read in a person or in his face?

          • My apologies for the length of this rant, but, you’ve kind of asked for it.

I happen to know much about depression because it runs in my family (I was fortunate enough not to get it). Depression is not correlated to personality type, and can strike any one of the 16 types, though it manifests differently in each one. I have xNFP and an xNTP family members that both have depression and both handle it very, very differently. And in Fi-users it is not always due to the reasons you have listed, though it sometimes and often is. For instance, depression can be caused by certain genes that are passed down hereditarily. Depression can be caused by pregnancy, or the death of a loved one, or any other traumatising experience that is not correlated in any way to personality type. In short, you’ve overlooked a lot of variables when coming to conclusions.

Also, what makes you think that all IxxJs are extremely self-conscious? (you’ve given me premises from which to believe you). On the other hand, there are six IxxJs in my family. Of all of those, only one is self-conscious. Self-conciousness is a product of low self-esteem and/or embarrassment and can be present in any of the 16 types for any variation of time.

It sounds to me like you’re an empiricist who relies on patterns to come to conclusions. In that case, riddle me this: if people’s psyche is reflected in their facial features, why do I, as an INTJ, look miserable when I am happy, angry when I am happy and sad when I am tired? Can you read, in Mr. Darcy’s face, the secrets of his phsyche? And how can you account for other variables, such as mental illness (which most people seem to think it’s okay to ignore when it comes to personality theories) and circumstance (which would today be completely different for an INFP in American than an INFP in Palestine). Or, would you also assume, that people who tend to make similar facial expressions due to autism all have the same personality?

And, before we continue, can I just point out that reason our arguments are reaching no conclusions is because both of us have a different definition of every aspect of the MBTI theory. This is typical of every single class discussion in a beginning level philosophy class and it irks me to no end. I don’t know what sources you’ve consulted, but either they have not explained Carl Jung’s theories clearly enough or they have misinterpreted them. Which it is, I am not in a position to say.
