Burgundy – Pokémon: INFP

Guest Post by Andrew, ENTJ

Pokémon Anime

Dominant Introverted Feeling (Fi): Burgundy can take criticism way too personally. Her entire motivation for starting a rivalry with Cilan stems from a single honest assessment he made on her relationship with one of her Pokémon – which she found less than flattering – when she was still very young. Even as an adult, she hates seeing Cilan achieve success in his endeavours, and she sulks on the sidelines when her nemesis wins battles and tournaments. Burgundy bases her opinions almost entirely on personal impressions rather than factual evidence, such as when she states that Ash is incompatible with all of his Pokémon. Notwithstanding her childish exterior, however, Burgundy cares deeply about every one of her Pokémon. She also has a friend in Iris’ rival, Georgia, even though the two of them are prone to bickering with each other.

Georgia – Pokémon: ENTJ

Guest Post by Andrew, ENTJ

Pokémon Anime Franchise

Dominant Extroverted Thinking (Te): Georgia is always ready for business. She knows what she wants to accomplish, and she goes after it using everything she has. Georgia also acts as if on a tight schedule (though none is ever mentioned), and she hates when people waste her time. Georgia wants Iris, her rival, to be a strong trainer so as to build credibility for the rivalry. She believes that a good trainer will have total control over his/her Pokemon in every battle, and she loses respect for Iris whenever one of the latter’s Pokemon disobeys her. Georgia’s strategy for beating Dragon-types is straightforward; she usually uses a powerful Ice-type.

Trip – Pokémon: INTP

Guest Post by Andrew, ENTJ

Pokémon Anime Franchise

Dominant Introverted Intuition (Ni): From a young age, Trip wants to train and battle with Pokemon. More specifically, he wants to defeat Alder, the champion of the Unova region, in a Pokemon battle from the time he meets his one-time hero in early childhood. Trip always has an idea of how every battle will end before it even starts, and he uses this ability to judge which battles will help him improve the most (Ni-Te). To Trip, experience and popularity are not necessarily indicators of strength; at the very beginning of his journey, he battles Ash, who has already battled a great deal before, with the full intention of winning––which he does. As Trip himself gets stronger, he starts to believe that he can and will defeat anybody, even regional champions; to prove his point, he chooses a poor strategy in his long-awaited match with Alder, insisting that the result would be the same no matter what. Trip is a largely defensive trainer who lets his opponents attack him first instead of trying to seize the initiative right away in battle.

Stephan – Pokémon: ISTP

Guest Post by Andrew, ENTJ

Pokémon Anime Franchise

Dominant Introverted Thinking (Ti): Although Stephan can be an impatient trainer, he will take a second to think over his situation before he acts. He will quickly and silently analyze each battle he is in, and then unleash his full fury on his opponents. Outside of battle, he will thoroughly examine his weaknesses and those of his Pokémon and will come up with unique ways to counter them. He figures things out alone, with no need for studying or having a mentor. Stephan can be a little too honest when criticizing people, and will sometimes step on their toes by accident. His name has an unusual pronunciation (it’s pronounced ste-FAHN, not STEF-en or Steven), and he always takes a moment to correct the people (i.e. practically everybody) who get his name wrong.

Cilan – Pokémon: ENFP

Guest Post by Andrew, ENTJ

Pokémon Anime Franchise

Dominant Extroverted Intuition (Ne): Cilan’s interests are many and varied. He is a Pokemon Connoisseur, a science connoisseur, a fishing connoisseur, a railroad connoisseur, etc. Cilan likes to explore connections between trainers and their Pokemon, and, seemingly at random times, he will put forth his analysis of such relationships (he even interrupts battles to do this). Cilan decides to travel with Ash on the spur of the moment, all because Ash shows him (by example) new possibilities in trainers relating to and working with their Pokemon. He doesn’t count his chickens before they hatch, either in battles or in anything else, and he tends to clash with people who have pre-ordained and/or narrow views on anything.

Iris – Pokémon: ISTP

Guest Post by Andrew, ENTJ

Pokémon Anime Franchise

Dominant Introverted Thinking (Ti): Iris hates rules and boundaries, especially the stifling ones she experienced at school. She is always brutally honest, even when her honesty is neither needed nor appreciated, especially when it comes to Pokemon battles. Iris has a disdain for book learning (indeed, she often gets textbook facts wrong) and apathy for being taught by others, preferring instead to figure things out on her own. She prefers a logical approach to problem-solving and doesn’t generally respect people who make emotional decisions. When Iris first meets Ash, she doesn’t know or care about his many past accomplishments; his battle style makes little sense to her and he gets caught up in his emotions, earning him permanent “little kid” status in her book.

Clemont – Pokémon: INTP

Guest Post by Andrew, ENTJ

Pokémon Anime Franchise

Dominant Introverted Thinking (Ti): Clemont loves machines. He has a whole gym full of gadgets that he’s invented himself, and he invents all manner of technological contraptions while on the road with Ash (Ti-Ne). Clemont’s affinity with machines comes from his view of life as a system to be analyzed and exploited if necessary, and Clemont applies this worldview to all aspects of his life, not just to his tinkering. For instance, he deconstructs Ash’s battle style in order to find weaknesses as part of his preparation to battle his friend. Also, he builds a robot, Clembot, to run his gym for him, and he programs Clembot with a “wish list” of qualities and qualifications that he would like to see in potential challengers.

Conway – Pokémon: INTP

Guest Post by Andrew, ENTJ

Pokémon Anime Franchise

Dominant Introverted Thinking (Ti): Conway is an intellectual first and last. He takes pleasure in researching statistics for upcoming battles and has the most fun when he is using his brain. Conway never shares his thought processes with others, preferring to work things out in his head rather than thinking out loud (and excluding input from other people). However, after figuring everything out, he proudly shares his conclusions. Conway has a focus on the theoretical foundations of his battle plans; while this gives him creativity beyond that of Ash, Dawn, or Paul (all Te-users), it also causes him to get caught up in his head rather than pay attention to the reality of his situation.

Kenny – Pokémon: ENFJ

Guest Post by Andrew, ENTJ

Pokemon Anime Franchise

Dominant Extroverted Feeling (Fe): Kenny puts others’ emotions before his own. He commiserates with Dawn when she doesn’t make the battle rounds of a contest, even when he qualifies. He also doesn’t put pressure on his Pokemon when they lose battles, preferring to take the blame for himself instead. Kenny tries hard to conceal his feelings for Dawn, as he is unsure how she (or Ash or Brock) will receive them; his main recourse is to tease Dawn about her nickname (“Dee Dee”). When he lets slip certain indicators of how he feels (and Dawn doesn’t notice), he resorts to desperate measures to keep Ash quiet. Upon meeting Ash and Brock, he makes sure to get in their good books right away (by telling funny stories about Dawn), and he befriends Barry, a trainer from his hometown, immediately upon meeting him.

Harley – Pokémon: INFP

Guest Post by Andrew, ENTJ

Pokémon Anime Franchise

Dominant Introverted Feeling (Fi): Harley lives in a reality where feelings are paramount – and only his own, not anyone else’s. In fact, he has a tendency to blow trivial hurts out of proportion and to hold grudges for ridiculous reasons. He doesn’t only hate the girl who stole his snack in school, but also the girl who looks exactly like her (May). He has a vendetta against May for no other reason than this; he does everything in his power to humiliate her in public and derives pleasure from her embarrassment. Harley gives captivating contest performances which engage the emotions of the audience, but he opts to work with their fear and shock rather than their wonder and admiration. He is individualistic in both his clothing style (derived from his favorite Pokemon, Cacturne) and his effeminate mannerisms.

Barry – Pokémon: ESTP

Guest Post by Andrew, ENTJ

Pokemon Anime Franchise

Extroverted Sensing (Se): Barry is notoriously hyperactive. He runs when anyone else would walk, and he does not look where he is going, often colliding with Ash when they meet. His battling style is flashy and very aggressive. He attacks with abandon, and he builds up his Pokemon’s speed so as to land hits fast. Barry has no concept of gradualism, asserting that he wants to be the best trainer there is in the least possible time. Similarly, in individual battles, he is often overconfident, stating that nothing can or will stop him from winning. Barry is extremely competitive and wants to prove himself through head-to-head battles. He maintains that data used to analyze trainers is useless if not constantly kept up-to-date, as trainers’ strengths and strategies change constantly.
