Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody: ISTJ

Guest Post by Andrew, ENTJ

Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling

Dominant Introverted Sensing (Si): Above all else, Moody does not like to take chances. He would rather take a long time doing something to make sure that he is successful than take a shortcut about which he is the least bit unsure (e.g. taking Harry to the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix). Moody uses a magic eye which allows him to be completely aware of his surroundings: it can move around in his head freely, and see through anything at its owner’s will. Moody uses each person’s past behaviour as an indicator of what he or she will do in the future, and he neither forgets nor fully forgives past transgressions. Moody enjoys comparing a group photograph of the original Order of the Phoenix with the membership of the new Order, and going over what happened to each member who didn’t make it.

Auxiliary Extroverted Thinking (Te): When he works with other people, Moody generally takes charge. He likes to rely on a set plan of action for whatever he does, and he wants to be the one who makes that plan. He expects others to be reliable, diligent, and efficient in what they do, and he has no patience for people who monkey around or act sloppy and careless. In the case of Mundungus Fletcher, who is notoriously cowardly and shifty, Moody keeps a close eye on him in an attempt to keep him in line. Moody takes pride in his career successes and resents it when anyone undoes his work (e.g. when the Ministry releases Death Eaters that he has captured).

Tertiary Introverted Feeling (Fi): Although his appearance and mannerisms make most people uncomfortable, Moody doesn’t care. He doesn’t even seem to notice unless someone says it outright. He acts like everybody else should have the same grisly, morbid interests as he does (reminiscing on deaths and injuries, etc.). Moody seems emotionally detached from everything, and talks in shockingly casual ways about things that might go wrong. However, he has a strong internal moral code, as evidenced by his loyalty to Albus Dumbledore and his insistence on taking suspects alive whenever possible, even after his superiors have authorized lethal force.

Inferior Extroverted Intuition (Ne): As Moody got older, he became progressively more paranoid. As he experienced more and more horrific things in his professional life, he began to expect the same things everywhere he went (Si-Ne). This was ultimately why he retired from the Auror Office; he started overreacting to imagined dangers on a regular basis. Moody has been shown to consider even the most unlikely possibilities when making plans and to have bizarre backup plans in place to respond to things that “might” happen.
