Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, Suzanna Clarke
Dominant Extraverted Intuition (Ne): Vinculus has no problem bouncing around from place to place, living on the run for over eight years. He can anticipate problems and come up with solutions to them easily, like cutting Norrell’s bell cord and selling Strange spells. He tends to speak metaphorically (“I am the Book” and “[Strange and Norrell] are the spell John Uskglass is doing”). He understands certain things immediately, like that Mr Norrell is a liar and why his skin changed. He sees his new skin as all it could be, and the possibilities thrill him. Who cares what it is, what could it be?
Auxiliary Introverted Thinking (Ti): Vinculus is quick to find the contradictions in Childermass’s story when he visits him as a milliner. He doesn’t care much how people feel about something, just if they’ll do it, seeing no problems with Strange not wanting to be a magician, only that Strange doesn’t know magic. He often speaks in a way that makes sense only to himself, especially about the writing on his skin.
Tertiary Extraverted Feeling (Fe): Vinculus seems to be able to charm people when he wants; he convinces children to steal for him, is the best liked street magician in London and has not one, but five wives. He’s quick to share his misfortunes with anyone who’ll listen, like the carrier.
Inferior Introverted Sensing (Si): If a trick works for him, such as speaking with the ‘Spirit of the River Thames,’ Vinculus uses it “for many years,” only stopping when bystanders catch on. He immediately notices that Childermass’s cards (of Marseilles) are different from others. He is quite willing to pursue the same calling through his life, provided he can do his own thing in between prophesying.
