Armin Arlert: INFJ

Attack on Titan

Dominant Introverted Intuition (Ni): Armin is always looking to the future. The most obvious manifestation of this is his perpetual excitement about life beyond the wall. However, even as a civilian child, he accurately predicted the Titan attack moments before it happened. After joining the military, Armin hones his predictive abilities in the service of protecting his friends. He intuitively understands other people, including Titans, and uses this knack to get out of hairy situations more than once. In battle situations, Armin is good at strategically utilising the individual strengths of others, which makes him a great tactician. Armin is at his best when he is sure of his predictive abilities. However, he is tentative and has a hard time making decisions without feeling confident in the outcome.

Auxiliary Extroverted Feeling (Fe): Armin is a sensitive soul who struggles to cope with the traumas and ethical dilemmas of life at war. Wherever possible, Armin would prefer to talk things out peacefully as opposed to fighting. While he doesn’t have great self-awareness (how many times is he surprised when people mention a trait that he has?), he has a strong sense of other people’s needs and feelings. This allows him to connect with and build trusting relationships with people who others find standoffish (such as Annie). His inner emotional world is easily malleable to the words of others. Luckily, this means that others can motivate him to lead when his self-doubt invariably becomes crippling. After his first kill in battle, Armin devotes a lot of energy to wondering what kind of person she was, presuming (per his poor self-esteem) that she must have been much nicer than himself.

Tertiary Introverted Thinking (Ti): When it comes to trying to understand Titans, Armin doesn’t stick to traditionally held ideas. Instead he observes their behaviour (Se), trusts his gut (Ni) and comes up with new explanations that no one’s yet thought of (often correct explanations at that). While Armin’s unconventional way of thinking leads to discoveries and strategic battle plans that are critical to the survival of the human race, his thinking isn’t a perfect fit for every situation. For example, Armin often suggests talking things out in situations where it’s clear that the other side is fully out for blood. At other times, his need to analyze all variables can turn into overthinking, leaving him paralysed with anxiety.

Inferior Extroverted Sensing (Se): Although he’s a great strategist, Armin isn’t the strongest improviser and tends to work better with less pressure. At times when his intuition prompts him, however, he can take rapid action in the moment to mobilise others (often telling them he has a “hunch”). When he’s not panicking out of his mind, Armin is attuned to his surroundings. This often makes him the first one to recognise and react when something goes wrong during a mission. He often catches physical details that go unnoticed by others (cue Annie in the wrong ODM gear). It’s largely through observation that Armin is able to get to know his enemy, a task that makes his strategies work all the better.

Additional Mental Health Factors: Armin likely suffers from PTSD and may have high-masking autism.
